So, I came home from work tonight, feeling inspired not to work on concept art for my upcoming game, or to work on my world (which I’ll get to tonight..promise!
), so I mosied my way over to my favorite indie game blog (link on the side). And what delight was to be found burried several pages in! Choke on my Groundhog, You Bastard Robots is an absolute delight. It’s fun, it’s not 100 hours long (not that I’m against long games, but it was satisfying to beat something in one sitting), and it is absolutely insane.
It’s not the first game to take advantage of the “time travel” mechanic, but it does it beautifully. Looking something like a high schooler’s graph paper notebook, it is visually delightful. It doesn’t try to be anything terribly pretentious, and that’s why I like it. That’s why I like the title too. This game is about shooting up some bastard robots! There’s no need to be delicate about it, you are living out some teenage boy’s fantasy. And while I was never a teenage boy, I really, really enjoyed it. Near the end I found myself making decoys of myself who I knew wouldn’t live, but did it to ensure future survival. There’s nothing more satisfying than watch your carefully laid plans go to work against those robots.
Now, it’s not perfect. I did find a few small glitches mostly involving my dead corpse never actually becoming dead, simply running in place, and one weird little part where I was stuck on the edges of the map. The only graphical change I would have made would be to make the current character brighter, maybe a red or an orange. The green allowed you to blend in too easily with the other lives, and on the last level I would have really enjoyed seeing which one I was. While you can get hordes of characters on the screen at once, I really enjoyed when it was me and 5 of my past lives more than huge hordes. Aside from these issues, it was a delightful game. Especially when you consider how long it took to make it ( a month, which is absolutely outstanding I need to read better, it was 4 days). I fully intend to check out some of the other games tonight before I get to writing.
Apparently this guy also made Crayon Physics…which is amazing! Now I’m torn between writing or working on some C#…I think I know what i’ll end up doing.
I found your site through a trackback. I’m glad to know that you enjoyed the game, but I wanted to point out that the game was actually made in four days (not in a month). I wanted to fix a lot of the things for the game but unfortunately I didn’t have the time to do it
I’ll correct that, sorry about the mistake. As a student of game design, I have to admit that I’m awed by your work. I’ve done some rapid prototyping with a group of 3 others, and we never got as polished a project as what you got! You’re really an inspiration
