Why I Wish I Could Code. August 14, 2008

I’m an artist and a writer. I’m not a code monkey. I’ll write you a story, draw some nice concept art, do some 3d, but I cannot code to save my life. I get a lot of ideas on games I’d love to make, cool mechanics, nice art. But I can’t do it. I can’t put the pieces together, and that is so insanely frustrating. I came up with a good idea tonight, for instance. But can I do it? Probably not. I was at one point vaugely competent with actionscript 2, but my boyfriend encouraged me to try out AS3. And now I’m not even sure if I can do it, but I’m afraid to resort to an older, more fammiliar language. I know I’ve never had a head for math. I really like the idea of being able to do something on my own, but I really don’t want to just copy/paste code. I want to understand it as much as I understand polygons and verticies and rigging. Maybe I’m asking too much of myself by trying to multitask like that, but being able to make a game -entirely- on my own would be amazing. I’ve always worked in teams. For once, I think, I want to do something on my own.
